Riders Knee Pain

Explained...

Do you experience knee pain in the saddle or ofter riding?

So many riders experience knee pain in the saddle, but riding itself doesn’t cause knee pain. Riding definitely highlights an underlying cause and at times, can make riding unbearable!

There are typically 4 cause of knee pain, these include:

  • Arthritis
  • Strained ligaments
  • Tendonitis
  • Muscular Tightness

Most believe that Arthritis is the underlying cause, and for some it is but. Only an X-ray or MRI can formally diagnose Arthritis.

Even doctors can’t see ‘in’ your body!

Having a formal diagnosis doesn’t change how you can help yourself but it often changes how you perceive management.

Arthritis and any of the other typical causes of knee pain can be managed or eradicated altogether when you follow a simple protocol of ‘stretching and strengthening’ the muscles, ligaments and tendons surrounding and supporting the knee joint itself.

When I first met Pippa, she had been diagnosed with Arthritis by the GP. The pain and inability to do simple everyday tasks were inhibiting her love for life, long walks, and hopes of returning to the saddle.

Working full-time and caring for her mum who was crippled with Arthritis, Pippa was reminded daily of what her future could look like if she didn’t take control.

You see many people are ‘diagnosed’ with a label but a condition such as Arthritis can only be confirmed by a scan.

Whether Pippa had arthritis or not, the management is the same. You need to improve your function. Create strength and stability within your muscles and ligaments to reduce the stress on the joints.

A few years ago, I began to experience problems with my knee – just one of them! – which began to make things difficult.  I was disabling myself by being over-protective in effect.

As Clare has surmised, the pain came from over taxed muscles not the arthritis. I learned from Clare that I could do far more physically than I thought.

I’ve been working with Clare for 3 months now, and I’m fitter than I have been in a very long time.

I can get off the floor very easily, walk 10 miles, carry heavy weights without throwing my back out and I have a lot more energy. It’s not always easy, and I have fallen off the wagon more than once when work is very busy, but the trend is consistently positive.

Thank you Clare!
